What is the "Prophecy of the Popes" and does it point at Pope Francis as the final pope?

The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, is a mysterious document that allegedly predicts the succession of popes from the 12th century to the present. According to legend, Saint Malachy, an Irish bishop, had a vision while visiting Rome in 1139, in which he foresaw 112 future popes. Each pope was described with a short Latin phrase, often interpreted symbolically. The prophecy remained largely unknown until it was published in 1595 by a Benedictine monk, Arnold Wion, in his book Lignum Vitae. Many scholars believe the prophecy was a 16th-century forgery designed to influence papal elections, but others argue that some descriptions are eerily accurate.

The prophecy is particularly intriguing because it suggests that the final pope—described as Petrus Romanus (Peter the Roman)—will lead the Church during a period of great tribulation, culminating in the destruction of Rome. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, does not fit the name “Peter the Roman” directly, but some interpreters argue that his Italian heritage connects him to the prophecy. Others note that his focus on humility and pastoral care aligns with the idea of a pope “feeding his flock.” While some believe Francis is the final pope before a great upheaval, the Catholic Church does not officially recognize the prophecy, and many theologians dismiss it as unreliable. However, among traditionalist Catholics and apocalyptic thinkers, the idea that Pope Francis might be the last pope remains a subject of speculation.

Another related mystery concerns the burial niches for popes in St. Peter’s Basilica. Some reports suggest that only one or two spaces remain, leading to theories that the Vatican is running out of room for future popes. However, Pope Francis has expressed a desire to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome rather than in the Vatican. Additionally, recent changes to papal burial customs have made it more common for popes to be buried outside of St. Peter’s, making the number of remaining niches less significant.

Ultimately, the Prophecy of the Popes continues to fascinate believers and skeptics alike. While the Catholic Church does not officially endorse it, some within the faith take it seriously, particularly those inclined toward apocalyptic interpretations of history. Whether Pope Francis is truly the final pope, as the prophecy suggests, remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that his papacy has been marked by significant reforms and challenges—adding to the intrigue surrounding his legacy and the future of the Church.
